What is ultrasound?
Ultrasound, or what is called duplex, is the most common type of examination that uses high-frequency sound waves to evaluate patients with vascular diseases. It simultaneously displays arteries and veins on the computer screen. An ultrasound examination is a non-invasive and painless procedure, as it does not require the use of tubes or painful needles, It also doesn’t require the use of dyes or exposure to potentially harmful radiation, and there are no known side effects or complications. Therefore, it can even be performed during pregnancy.
What are the uses of ultrasound in the field of vascular medicine?
Ultrasound contributes to the diagnosis of many vascular diseases, for the following reasons:
1- تُحدد الموجات فوق الصوتية موقع ودرجة انسداد الشريان وتصلبه.
2- Ultrasound reveals the degree of aneurysm and arterial dilation.
3- Ultrasound diagnoses blood clots in the veins.
4- Ultrasound assesses abnormal blood flow through the veins.
5- Ultrasound determines the speed and direction of blood flow.
5- It tracks disease progression in patients who do not yet require therapeutic intervention, to monitor the progression of their condition.
6- It can also be used as a tool to monitor patients who have undergone a vascular procedure, to ensure the effectiveness of the treatment plan being followed.
Are there other tests required for patients with vascular diseases?
Ultrasound is the best method for initially diagnosing suspected vascular diseases, but a specialized vascular doctor might recommend more detailed examinations, such as angiography or computed tomography (CT) scans, to establish an effective treatment plan.
How should I prepare for an ultrasound?
When undergoing ultrasound to diagnose varicose veins, please follow these instructions:
– Do not wear compression stockings for 24 hours before the examination.
Do not apply skin moisturizers on the day of the examination.
– Remove any bandages used for ulcers before the examination and replace them with a simple, clean dressing.
Remove all jewelry and wear loose, comfortable clothing to facilitate access to the area targeted for ultrasound.
